Overview

Education in Canada is run by each province, which means the system is varied but consistently high in quality. Public universities offer research-led degrees, while colleges and polytechnics offer applied diplomas and degrees with close links to employers. English and French are both official languages, and most institutions teach in English.

Why study there

Canada is known for being welcoming to international students and for a quality of life that families find reassuring. Universities are well regarded internationally, tuition is often more moderate than in the US or UK, and many programmes include co-operative work terms that build experience before graduation.

Education options

  • Bachelor’s degrees, usually four years, often with co-op options
  • Master’s and doctoral programmes
  • College diplomas, advanced diplomas and post-graduate certificates
  • Pathway and English language programmes
  • Public and private secondary schooling for international students

Universities & institutions

Canada’s major research universities are joined by strong comprehensive and primarily undergraduate universities and by a large college sector. The distinction between university and college matters for a student’s goals, costs and future options, and Visafy explains it clearly before any shortlist is made.

School opportunities

Many public school boards and independent schools accept international students, typically with homestay. Provincial high school diplomas lead directly to university and college applications. Visafy works with families on school choice, custodianship and the move into post-secondary study.

Study tours

Canadian institutions are experienced hosts for school groups, and tours can combine campus visits, classroom participation, outdoor education and cultural programmes across one or two provinces.

Application process

Applications go directly to institutions, or through provincial application services in some provinces [verify: for example Ontario’s centralised services]. Intakes are usually September and January, with some programmes offering May [verify]. Visafy manages the process from shortlist to acceptance.

Visa guidance

International students need a study permit, which requires a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, a provincial attestation letter where applicable, and proof of funds [verify current requirements, caps and processing times]. Post-graduation work permits are available for eligible programmes [verify]. Policy changes are tracked in the insights below.
